The Loricifera...

Phylum Loricifera...

The loriciferans are the most recent phylum described. The first known representative of this exclusively marine meiobenthic taxon was discovered in 1974 in medium sand at 400m depth off the coast of North Carolina. Since the description of the phylum nine species representing three genera and two families have been described, but over 23 other species are known currently. Adults loriciferans are bilaterally symmetrical and between 115-383 um long. The Phylum Loricifera consists of a single order, the Nanoloricida Kristensen, 1983, and two described families: the Nanolaricidae, consisting of two genera each with three species and the Pliciloricidae, with the genera Pliciloricus and Rugiloricus.
