Application of Uncertainty Analysis to Ecological Risks of Pesticides

While current methods used in ecological risk assessments for pesticides are largely deterministic, probabilistic methods that aim to quantify variability and uncertainty in exposure and effects are attracting growing interest from industries and governments. Probabilistic methods offer more realistic and meaningful estimates of risk and hence, potentially, a better basis for decision-making. Application of Uncertainty Analysis to Ecological Risks of Pesticides examines the applicability of probabilistic methods for ecological risk assessment for pesticides and explores their appropriateness for general use.

There are many methods of analyzing variability and uncertainty and many ways of presenting the results. Inappropriate use of these methods leads to misleading results, and experts differ on what is appropriate. Disagreement about which methods are appropriate will result in wasted resources, conflict over findings, and reduced credibility with decision makers and the public. There is, therefore, a need to reach a consensus on how to choose and use appropriate methods, and to present this in the form of guidance for prospective users. Written in a clear and concise style, the book examines how to use probabilistic methods within a risk-based decision paradigm.

Just a quik reminder that the deadline for registration in the Workshop on ‘Meiofauna from chemosynthetic deep-sea environments’ is next 30 June 2010.

The workshop has been organized by the Census of Marine Life project ChEss (Biogeography of Deep-Water Chemosynthetic Ecosystems) in conjunction with the 14th International Meiofauna Conference at Ghent University for July, 17 2010. This workshop is organized by Monika Bright and Ann Vanreusel and we would like to invite you to attend for free.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together meiofauna researchers who are interested in any biological aspect concerning deep- sea reducing environments, such as hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, whale falls, sunken wood, and areas of low oxygen that intersect with continental margins and seamounts.

We will have sessions in which we will discuss the current state of knowledge of biogeography, biodiversity and abundance, ecology, origin and evolution, morphological and molecular phylogeny, and taxonomy, and future plans. Further we will discuss the possiblities of multidisciplinary and integrative research, building a platform of researchers to combine our efforts in databases, field programmes, and outreach activities.

Ghent University is the coordinating university.

Ecological Assessment of Selenium in the Aquatic Environment

Selenium can be beneficial but it can also be toxic, particularly to egg-laying vertebrates (fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles). Concentrations of selenium in the environment are increasing globally as a result of mining, power generation, agriculture, and animal husbandry. Population-level effects from selenium in natural ecosystems have been definitively documented in three freshwater lakes and reservoirs and are suspected elsewhere in both freshwater and estuarine environments.

Ecological Assessment of Selenium in the Aquatic Environment summarizes the state-of-the-science and provides globally applicable guidance for assessing and managing the environmental effects of selenium. This book is based on the deliberations of a multidisciplinary and international group of scientists, managers, and policymakers. Key content includes:

The scholarship granted by the Flemish interuniversity council and university development cooperation is oriented towards students and professionals from countries from the following list: VLIR country list. The VLIR scholarship programme is particularly aimed to people from developing countries with a minimum of professional experience who occupy key or strategic positions at an institution in their native country. The opportunities for knowledge application and transfer after the scholar returns home are an important scholarship selection criterion. Other admission requirements refer to: age, education, motivation, language, gender, financial resources.

With the support of the Belgian Directorate-General for Development Cooperation, each year 12 scholarships are assigned to students applying for the Master of Nematology.

The Darwin Scholarship Programme has been running since 2008. Over 40 people from 25 countries have attended. Feedback from the programmes have been tremendously positive
In 2010 we will be running the third Darwin Scholarship Programme. We are now inviting applications for the 25 places that are available.

The scholarship programme is aimed at…
Young Scientists from around the world, probably working for an non-governmental organisation, government department or in a Biology or Ecology faculty at University. You should be under the age of 35 and studying at graduate or post graduate level or be a young lecturer or work for an environmental organisation.
The aim of the Darwin Scholar Programme is to develop “better naturalists” in the spirit of Darwin’s love of nature and observing the natural world. The Scholarship will focus on three areas - skills of observation and identification - skills of recording biodiversity and skills of communicating biodiversity to different target groups
This is a unique opportunity to work with leading scientists and educators in the UK and will be based in Shrewsbury - a beautiful historic English market town and the birthplace of Charles Darwin.

Today we are celebrating 3 years of Meiofauna Brasil on air...

Maybe some of you can remember that in the begining was all in Portuguese, than with 6 months we've decided to translate everything to English.

In the second year of Meiofauna Brasil we migrated for the new format of Blogger which have new resources including the possibility of marking our posts with keywords. We also started to send periodical updatings for a selected e-mail list (based on the adresses in THIRIMCO). If somebody wants to be included just contact us in our e-mail: meiofaunablogspot@gmail.com

In the third year we changed our layout for this new beautiful blue version (very well done by Priscila). We also reorganized the links and added a new research resource using Google which makes the looking for specific subjects quiet easier than before.

Furthermore we created profiles on Twitter (http://twitter.com/meiofaunabrasil) and Orkut (http://www.orkut.com.br/Main#Profile.aspx?origin=is&uid=7313733478867360227 (it is necessary to be joined)!

What we really expect is to spread more an more the Meiofauna Brasil website and "popularize" our fascinating animals!

We know that there is still much to improve and specially concern the need of keeping it more updated. Sometimes it is a quite difficult task with all our activities but we will continue...

We also would like to use the opportunity to ask our dear visitors to give their suggestions and help us sending news about meiofauna. So, feel free to send us your comments and sugestions!

The "VIII Encontro de Bioincrustação, Ecologia Bêntica e Corrosão" (VIII Meeting of Bioincrustation, Benthic Ecology and Corrosion) happened last week, in 27-31 July 2009 and, as we noticied here previously, honored Prof. Dra. Verônica Fonsêca Genevois this year with a Tribute.

Fot those who do not know Dra. Fonsêca-Genevois, she is the precursor of meiobenthic studies in Brazil. During her carreer she already supervisioned 7 PhD, 27 master and 12 graduation works.

We from Meiofauna Brasil were present in this important moment for Brazilian meiobenthologists making some videos and photos. Currently the videos are being edited and subtitled. Soon we will update here with all videos and photos. For now, enjoy one of the after-tribute photos.

Meiofauna Training Course in Panama!

A meiofauna training course will be hosted in early June 2010 (exact dates to be determined) at the Smithsonian Institution's Bocas del Toro Research Station in Panama. The course will have the nature of a workshop, with 6-8 invited meiofauna specialists and up to 12 students.

NeMys is back!

As you have noticed, NeMys has been offline during the last few months but I have good news for all nematologists.The NeMys website is back online since 1 march 2009.

According to the NeMys team, some aspects still are not optimally running. Within the next weeks you may expect changes and updates to the system in order to get everything back to the same level as before the crash!

The NeMys team is also asking users to register themselves again to the system.

For those who do not know, NeMys is a generic online species information system. It wants to act as a digital platform, storing all kinds of information for biological taxa. Storing data on morphology, biogeography, taxonomy, literature, pictures, collections and molecular aspects in one single dataset creates a large group of possible end users and allows data analysis and comparison for a specific taxonomic group from a variety of approaches. The generic architecture is reflected by the variety of databases available through this system: plants, animals (vertebrates and invertebrates).
